Timeless Elegance: Avoid These 9 Crucial Mistakes Every Woman Should Steer Clear Of

A quote I like says “Elegance is an attitude”, and so it is. Independently from how expensive your clothes or your jewellery are.  Elegance is given, in fact, by an ensemble of different things, starting from the volume of your voice when you talk, the way you speak, your gestures, the way you stand as well as the way you wear and take care of your clothes.

And yes ladies, the way you carry your bag can determine your elegance too! Please notice I said “the way”, which has (again) with the monetary value of your item(s)!

Now, among the several errors & horrors I often see around, here I made a selection of 7 things you should be avoiding (if you want to look elegant…ça va sans dire!).

Just a little disclosure statement before we get to all details: I wasn’t immune myself to some of these errors either, as they can literally happen to all of us, which is absolutely fine, as we are all human!

This said, there is always a way to get better ladies!

1) Banish Bubbles

Wearing clothes full of bubbles is not elegant. You can easily solve this issue by buying a nice tool called lint remover. I bought myself one on Amazon. Easy-peasy and super useful!

2) Nail Elegance 101: Ditch the Art from your fingers

Do you really want me to comment this point? Nail art. Period. Unless you wear artificial nails with a delicate French manicure, nail art is pretty far from being something elegant. Of course, if you don’t care about looking elegant, go for it!

3) Excessive Perfume Puddles: Less is More, Darling!

I get it, you love your signature scent, but drowning yourself in it won’t make it last longer or make you more memorable. A subtle spritz is enough to leave a lasting impression without making others choke on your fragrance. Trust me; moderation is the key here!

4) Sloppy Shoe Situations: Don’t Trip on Unkempt Heels

Your shoes are like the punctuation to your outfit. Scuffed, worn-out heels or dirty sneakers can ruin the most elegant ensemble. Give your shoes some TLC, and they’ll repay you by carrying you with grace. Plus, a well-maintained pair lasts longer, saving you money in the long run.

My advice: find yourself a good shoemaker and make sure he/she is the right one to take care of your shoes 🙂

5) Over-accessorizing: Remember, Coco Chanel Said, “Before You Leave the House, Look in the Mirror and Take One Thing Off.”

Accessories should complement, not overwhelm. Too many baubles can turn your ensemble into a circus act. Keep it classy with a few well-chosen pieces. Coco Chanel’s advice still holds — simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.

6) Snubbing the Power of Tailoring: Your Clothes Should Hug, Not Swallow

Off-the-rack clothes seldom fit perfectly. Invest in a good tailor who can transform your wardrobe from ordinary to extraordinary. Well-fitted clothes enhance your silhouette, making you look effortlessly elegant. Remember, it’s not about the brand; it’s about the fit!

7) Ignoring Posture: Stand Tall and Own the Room

Slouching isn’t a good look on anyone. Stand tall, shoulders back, and exude confidence. Good posture not only improves your appearance but also boosts your self-esteem. Remember, elegance is not just about clothes; it’s about how you carry yourself!

8) Too Much Trend-Chasing: Style > Fashion Fads

While trends come and go, style is timeless. Constantly chasing the latest fads can leave you with a closet full of regrets. Find what works for you and your unique body, build a wardrobe with timeless pieces, and let your unique style shine through.

Before any new purchase, you should ask yourself the following questions:

 1) Will the silhouette flatter my shape and size? 2) Will the fabric drape and smooth over my contours? 3) Will the colour(s) flatter my skin tone? 4) Are there any interesting details that set it apart from the ordinary?

For further information about styling I highly recommend the book “The pocket stylist” by Kendall Farr: https://amzn.to/3SyxiYM

9) Neglecting the Basics: The Foundation of Elegance

A flawless look starts with well-maintained basics. Wrinkled shirts, faded colors, and stretched-out fabrics can undermine even the most stylish outfit. Keep your wardrobe foundation strong, and everything you wear will look more polished.

There would be so much more to say about this topic…another thing that comes to my mind while I’m writing, for instance, is confidence.
In fact, exuding confidence and grace is an indispensable factor when we speak about timeless elegance. Regardless of the outfit, these two elements do elevates one’s presence, leaving a lasting impression of sophistication and timeless allure.

Not to mention the understanding of proportion and balance in clothing choices, which is essential for achieving timeless elegance. Whether it’s balancing fitted and loose silhouettes or considering the proportions of accessories, maintaining harmony in one’s ensemble is key to a sophisticated look.

…and I could keep going with point nr. 12, nr. 13 etc. etc…

But let’s stop here for now!
Honestly: mastering all the above mentioned points would be just ammmazing and would make us even appropriate for a tea with the Royal Family!

So, my my beautiful fashionistas, that’s all I have for you this week! I hope you appreciated my research and looking forward to catch you in my next post!

Yours, B&TG
