The Capsule Wardrobe Ultimate Guide: Building The Perfect Capsule From Scratch & The Indispensables You Need

Are you tired of staring at a wardrobe full of clothes, yet feeling like you have nothing to wear? Do you find yourself constantly chasing the latest fashion trends, only to realize that they go out of style before you even have a chance to wear them? It’s time to simplify your wardrobe and build a capsule wardrobe that is both versatile and timeless. In this guide, I will walk you through the process of building an indispensable capsule wardrobe from scratch.

Just a little disclosure in the first instance, as I want to be completely transparent and honest with you guys: though I love to make up my own capsule wardrobe from time to time, in order to save time and energy over the week, my closet is far from looking like just a capsule. Nevertheless, I recognise all the advantages and benefits of this practice, which helped me to make a substantial order in my wardrobe, and to learn how to keep that order season after season, year after year. I’m not going to lie: it will take lots of time at the beginning, but the results will pay all your efforts back!

And, last but not least, you will finally love each and every single stitch on your hangers, instead of looking at them and feeling your frustration rise.

First things first: What is a Capsule Wardrobe?

Before we dive into the nitty-gritty of building a capsule wardrobe, let’s first understand what it actually means. A capsule wardrobe follows the concept of having a collection of clothing, shoes, and accessories that you will actually wear and love. It’s about curating a wardrobe that consists of pieces that are always in fashion, versatile, and reflect your personal style. While there is no set number of items you should have in your capsule wardrobe, most participants intentionally keep their collection small, focusing on quality over quantity.

Ideally, the number of clothes and accessories should be between 35 and 40 for Fall/Winter and the same for Spring/Summer; I try myself to stick as much as possible to this quantity, as I realised it’s just impossible (for me at least) to make it with a lower number of items, if you include in those 35 pieces both clothing and accessories.

The Benefits of a Capsule Wardrobe

Mess is stress. And that’s why building a capsule wardrobe offers numerous benefits beyond just decluttering your closet. By carefully selecting pieces that you truly love and will wear repeatedly, you can save time and reduce decision fatigue when getting dressed each day. Additionally, a capsule wardrobe can help you save money in the long run by avoiding impulse purchases and focusing on investing in high-quality, timeless pieces. It’s also a more sustainable approach to fashion, as you’ll be consuming less and making more conscious choices about the items you bring into your wardrobe.

Neutrals are definitely the best point to start with, as you can mix and match them effortlessly. When I speak of “neutrals” it’s not intended blacks and beiges only, but a pretty wide range of colours: from deep black to light grey, from off-white to cream, from beige to dark brown, from denim blue to navy blue and all the shades in between. So as you can see, you actually have a plethora of colours to play with! The ideal for a capsule wardrobe would be to have 70-75% of your clothes in neutral colours and the remaining 25-30% of bright colours like poppy red, leaf green, pink…depending on your complexion, it has to be a flattering colour, of course (a specific article about this topic I’ve scheduled for the coming weeks).

Step 1: Assess Your Current Wardrobe

Fine, but how to determine what to keep and what to toss? The first step in building an indispensable capsule wardrobe is to assess your current wardrobe. Take the time to go through each item and ask yourself the following questions:

interior design, wardrobe, clothes-6893061.jpg

  1. Do I love wearing this? Do I feel good in it?

  2. Does it fit me well? Keep only those things that really flatter your silhouette and proportion. If you didn’t read it yet, I strongly suggest to check out my previous post “How to recognise your body type”. Toss it if it’s wrong for your body type, if it’s an outdated silhouette, too small, too oversized…let it go!

  3. Is it in good condition? Please, get rid of any stretched or sprung bras, underwear and socks with holes, indelibly stained clothes…shall I go on?!

  4. Does it match my personal style? Every stitch in your wardrobe should be flattering to your body type and suit your lifestyle. Not the lifestyle you dream of, but your actual lifestyle.

  5. Can I create multiple outfits with it? This is valid for your actual items as well as for any new piece: you can’t buy it unless you can create at least two additional new looks with it! Bear in mind.

Be honest with yourself and let go of anything that doesn’t meet these criteria. Remember, your goal is to create a curated collection of pieces that you truly love and will wear frequently.

Create a charity pile somewhere in a corner, and weed out your clothes if:

  • They have the wrong colour for your skin type / are stained;
  • The print or pattern doesn’t flatter;
  • It looks good, feels bad;
  • The moment has passed;
  • It gives you an identity crisis;
  • It’s not your size right now, in the present.

Step 2: Define Your Personal Style

After decluttering your wardrobe, it’s time to define your personal style. Take a moment to think about the types of outfits that make you feel confident and comfortable. Consider your lifestyle, preferences, and the occasions you typically dress for. Are you more drawn to casual, relaxed looks, or do you prefer a more polished and tailored aesthetic? Use these insights to create a style vision board or a Pinterest board to gather inspiration and get a clear idea of the aesthetic you want to achieve with your capsule wardrobe.

If you think it might be useful or helpful in any way, you can refer to my Pinterest Board and see how I organised the different categories.

Step 3: Identify Your Core Essentials

Now that you have a better understanding of your personal style, it’s time to identify the core essentials that will form the foundation of your capsule wardrobe. These are the pieces that are versatile, timeless, and can be mixed and matched to create countless outfits. Here are nine key pieces that I recommend including in your indispensables:

  1. The Classic Jean (two pairs)

Well-fitted, straight-leg jeans are a must-have in any capsule wardrobe. Opt for a versatile wash that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. My suggestion is to have one pair hemmed to wear with heels and one hemmed to wear with flats/sneakers. Levi’s 501 seem to be the most versatile and flattering for any body type, so you can start from here. If you don’t have the budget, always consider thrifting: the best items I own (all branded, no kidding!) are from some second-hand shop.

  1. The White Shirt and T-Shirts

A crisp white, button-front shirt is a wardrobe staple that can be styled in endless ways. Whether you pair it with jeans for a casual look or tuck it into a tailored skirt for a more polished ensemble, a white shirt is a versatile piece that never goes out of style. As for T-shirts, I suggest you to have one black, one white and one navy (or, if you love stripes, a navy & white one), preferably with V-neck, as the V line helps create a vertical line and thus to visually elongate your silhouette (little trick!).

  1. The Little Black Dress

Having something that serves as a little black dress in your wardrobe is just the staple of the staples. Every woman needs a little black dress in her wardrobe. This timeless piece can be dressed up with heels and statement jewellery for a formal event, for an important meeting at work, or dressed down with sneakers and a denim jacket for a more casual outing. Choose a silhouette that flatters your body shape and make sure it’s a style that you feel comfortable and confident in.

  1. The Tailored Blazer (two pieces)

A well-fitted blazer instantly elevates any outfit. Whether you wear it with jeans and a T-shirt or pair it with tailored trousers for a more professional look, a blazer adds a sophisticated touch to your capsule wardrobe.
Choose two jackets in a colour that matches at least one of your dark trousers (either navy or black, see below, at point nr. 7). Corduroy and Cotton Twill are very good options if you have a sporty style like me; otherwise Velvet, Linen and Tweed are the best ones for a more elevated, elegant vogue.

  1. The Versatile Knit (three pieces)

Invest in staple sweaters that are comfortable, cozy, and can be layered with other pieces in your capsule wardrobe. Lightweight merino wool or cashmere are to me the best options. I’d suggest to have one in black or navy (again, they have to tonally match your dark bottoms), another neutral colour like grey, or camel that can easily be mixed and matched with different bottoms and outerwear, and one rich colour, for an outstanding outfit.

  1. The Coats (three pieces)

A timeless trench coat is a must-have outerwear piece that adds style and sophistication to any outfit. Look for a classic khaki or black trench coat that can be worn throughout the year and easily layered over your other capsule wardrobe essentials. One dark knee-length coat for both day and night and a winter coat in camel (depending of your Region, of course); I perfectly know wool and cashmere are not cheap, but if you find the right piece, you won’t regret: it will be the best investment of your life!

  1. Trousers (three pairs)

Navy, Black and Creamy White: having trousers in these three colours provides you with a good range of neutrals that can pair well with a variety of tops and shoes, blazers, and accessories, allowing you to create diverse looks with fewer clothing items. Also, neutral colours of the trousers make them suitable for all seasons, allowing you to transition seamlessly from Spring to Winter without having to completely change your wardrobe. Additionally, having trousers in these three colours offers options for both professional and casual looks, making your trousers suitable for various settings and occasions.

  1. The Leather Jacket

A leather jacket adds a cool and edgy vibe to any outfit. Look for a high-quality leather jacket in a style that suits your personal taste, whether it’s a classic moto jacket or a more modern bomber style. If you find one in genuine leather it will last you for decades!!

  1. The Versatile Dress

Choose a versatile dress that can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. Look for a silhouette that flatters your body shape and a colour or pattern that reflects your personal style.

  1. The Skirt (Three pieces)

Depending on your silhouette and lifestyle, I suggest to have in your capsule wardrobe three clean-line skirts, of which one classic, pencil skirt in a dark colour like black, dark grey or navy, one pleated for day and night and a third one, a longuette, in denim (better in a dark wash, no fade, no laces, they just look cheap).

Step 4: Add Versatility with Accessories

To further enhance the versatility of your capsule wardrobe, don’t forget to include accessories. These can completely transform an outfit and add a personal touch to your style. Consider adding the following accessories to your collection:

  • A statement necklace or earrings
  • Two belts, one black and one camel
  • Classic handbags. I have four for my capsule wardrobe: one backpack in light colours, one Tote in beige, one sporty crossbody bag in navy and one in black (crossbody too).
  • One or two silk scarfs, possibly with colourful patterns, to add some interest and intentionality to your neutral outfits.
  • Versatile footwear.  I usually play the game seasonally when it comes to shoes: I have six for Autumn/Winter and six for Spring/Summer. More precisely: one pair of off-white sneakers, one pair of black boots and one pair of camel boots for Winter; one pair of camel ballet flats, one pair of flats in black and one pair of creamy white loafers for Spring and Autum; one pair of white and one of black kitten-heel sandals, one pair of flat sandals in tan leather for Summer.
    Girls, this is an official outing: I own over 100 pairs of shoes, collected over the last 20 years. Some of them are over 20 years old, as I look after them maniacally. I love all of them and every time I plan my capsule wardrobe for the next season (or just for the coming week), I love to switch the three pairs weekly, so that at the end of the season I wore most of them. I know this is a kind of disease of mine, and if you have 10 pairs of shoes for all seasons it’s absolutely okay!

However, I think you get it: the principle of including accessories to the game is that they can be mixed and matched with your capsule wardrobe essentials to create different looks and add interest to your outfits.

Step 5: Curate and Organize Your Capsule Wardrobe

With your essential pieces and accessories identified, it’s time to curate and organize the capsule wardrobe of your dreams! Start by placing your core essentials in a prominent and easily accessible area of your closet. Consider using slimline hangers to maximize space and keep your clothes wrinkle-free. Arrange your items by category (e.g., tops, bottoms, dresses) and colour to make it easy to find what you’re looking for. I swear, it’s lots of fun and eventually it turns out to be extremely functional!

Step 6: Maintain and Update Your Capsule Wardrobe

As you can imagine, a capsule wardrobe is an ongoing process. As your style evolves and trends change, you may find the need to update or replace certain pieces in your collection. When adding new items to your capsule wardrobe, make sure they align with your personal style and are versatile enough to be mixed and matched with your existing pieces. As mentioned before, every new addition to your wardrobe should make you create at least (at least!) two different outfits. Remember, the goal is to build a wardrobe that stands the test of time and reflects your unique sense of style.

Building an indispensable capsule wardrobe from scratch has been for me a transformative experience: one thing is to read books and articles about the topic, another thing is to put into practice all those principles and suggestions. The very first step was the hardest one for me to face: you will find yourself in front of your disorganized, messy wardrobe and ask yourslef “where the hell shall I start from?!?”. My answer (the one I gave to myself in that moment): do not panic. Once you decide to bring some order and give a sense to that frustrating mass of fabrics, you will. Believe me, it’s such a good, releasing feeling! Start from a corner, this article in one hand, and let the flow do the rest.
You deserve to feel joy and happiness when getting dressed: this will be your mantra from now on!

By carefully curating a collection of versatile, timeless pieces, you can simplify your life, save money, and make more sustainable fashion choices. Remember to choose quality over quantity, define your personal style, and invest in pieces that you truly love and will wear repeatedly. With these steps and a little creativity, you’ll be well on your way to a wardrobe that is both functional and stylish!

That’s all from me this week girls! I hope you enjoyed my article (if so, I’d love to hear from you!) and wish you a wonderful, stylish weekend ahead!

Yours, B&TG
