My dearest shoe lovers and fashion enthusiasts! Let’s talk this time about the unsung heroes of every outfit – footwear. You know, those trusty soles that can make or break your entire look. Whether you’re a sneakerhead, a stiletto aficionado, or somewhere in between, the right pair of shoes can take your outfit from “meh” to “wow” in an instant.

In this article, we’re diving into the art of choosing the perfect footwear to complement your  style, because let’s face it, a killer outfit is only as good as the shoes you wear with it.

So, buckle up (or lace up) as we explore how to step up your fashion game one shoe at a time!

The Importance of Choosing the Right Footwear

When it comes to fashion, we often focus on our clothes, but we must not forget the importance of choosing the right footwear. Your shoes can make or break your outfit, and they also play a crucial role in your comfort and overall well-being. Whether you’re heading to the office, going for a run, or attending a formal event, selecting the appropriate pair of shoes is essential.

First and foremost, wearing the right footwear can prevent foot pain and injuries. Ill-fitting shoes can lead to blisters, calluses, and even more serious issues like bunions or plantar fasciitis. Additionally, the right shoes provide proper support and cushioning, reducing the strain on your feet and lower limbs.

Not to mention that your footwear is more likely the accessory that tells more than others about your taste level and eye for detail!

So, take the time to find the perfect pair that suits your needs, protects your feet and gives your style the perfect, final touch!

Understanding Your Foot Type

Before you embark on your quest for the ideal footwear, it’s crucial to understand your foot type. This knowledge will help you choose shoes that provide the right support and fit. There are three common foot types: flat feet, high arches, and neutral arches.

If you have flat feet, you’ll need shoes that offer stability and arch support. Look for footwear with motion control features and firm midsoles to prevent overpronation. On the other hand, individuals with high arches require shoes with ample cushioning to absorb shock. Look for flexible shoes that encourage natural foot movement.

If you have neutral arches, consider yourself lucky! You have a wider range of options since your feet are biomechanically efficient. However, it’s still crucial to find shoes that offer adequate support and cushioning. Remember, understanding your foot type is the first step in finding the perfect pair of footwear.

My tip: never buy anything that hurts, even if it’s the hysteria of the season. As long as you feel like you were walking on eggs in those high heels, you are wasting your money (and your feet)! Just let them be.

Determining the Occasion and Dress Code

Now that you know your foot type, it’s time to consider the occasion and dress code. Different events call for different types of footwear (as well as for bags). For formal occasions like weddings or black-dress events, opt for classic dress shoes. Closed-toe pumps, strappy heels, classic flats, and dressy sandals are excellent choices that exude elegance and sophistication.

On the other hand, casual events such as a day out with friends or a weekend brunch require a more relaxed approach. Sneakers, loafers, or ballerinas are comfortable and stylish options that will keep you looking chic without sacrificing comfort.

When it comes to workwear, consider your office dress code. If your workplace is more formal, stick to closed-toe shoes like mid-heel pumps or loafers. However, if your office allows for more casual attire, you can explore options like ankle boots or stylish flats.
Wearing stylish and polished sneakers is nowadays very on trend at the office. Still, loafers are, in my humble opinion, the perfect match between comfort and elegance.

Remember, your shoes should always complement your outfit and the occasion.

The Different Types of Footwear for Different Occasions

Let’s dive deeper into the various types of footwear suitable for different occasions. Just like bags, having a versatile shoe collection ensures you’re prepared for any event that comes your way.

  1. Formal Events: As mentioned earlier, classic dress shoes like closed-toe pumps, strappy heels, classic flats/loafers, and dressy sandals are perfect for formal occasions. Opt for neutral colours like black or brown to ensure they match your formal attire. If you are looking for an investment piece, I’d suggest you to go for a designer pair; along with the most known (YSL, Gucci, Prada, Christian Dior etc…), you could find something interesting and durable from the following brands: Calvin Klein, Jil Sander, Donna Karan, Tod’s, Clarks, Ralph Lauren.

  2. Casual Outings: For casual outings, comfort should be your top priority. Sneakers are a popular choice, offering both style and ease of movement. My favorites: Adidas (Sambas and Gazelles are by the way the latest hysteria!), Le Coq Sportif, and Convers One Stars if you want to stay safe.
Alternatively, you can go for boat shoes or ballet flats, depending on your personal style. I’d start my research with Unisa, Nine West, Max Mara, Flip Flop, Fila, Geox, Le Coq Sportif.

  3. Workwear: When it comes to office wear, it’s essential to strike a balance between professionalism and comfort. Closed-toe shoes like pumps or loafers are great options. Ankle boots and stylish flats are also appropriate for more casual office settings (as just mentioned in the last paragraph). Midprice lines I suggest you to consider: Michael Kors, Furla, L’Autre Chose, Alviero Martini, Kate Spade, Anne Klein, Kurt Geiger.

By having the right footwear for each occasion, you can ensure both comfort and style, allowing you to make a lasting impression wherever you go.

Tips for finding the perfect fit

Finding the perfect fit is crucial to ensure comfort and prevent foot problems. Here are some tips to help you find shoes that fit just right:

  1. Measure Your Feet: Feet can change in size and shape over time, so it’s essential to measure them periodically. Use a measuring tape or visit a professional shoe store for accurate measurements.

  2. Try on Shoes in the Afternoon: Feet tend to swell throughout the day, so it’s best to try on shoes in the afternoon when your feet are at their largest. This ensures a more accurate fit.

  3. Wiggle Room: When trying on shoes, make sure there’s enough wiggle room for your toes. Your toes should not feel cramped or squeezed together. Aim for about a thumb’s width of space between your longest toe and the front of the shoe.

  4. Walk Around: Take a few laps around the store or your house while wearing the shoes to ensure they’re comfortable and don’t rub or cause any discomfort. Pay attention to any pressure points or areas that feel tight.

  5. Consider Orthotics: If you have specific foot conditions or require additional support, consider using orthotic inserts or custom-made insoles. These can help address any biomechanical issues and provide extra comfort.

By following these tips, you can find shoes that fit perfectly, providing the comfort and support your feet deserve.

How to Assess the Quality and Durability of Footwear

When investing in footwear, it’s important to assess the quality and durability to ensure you’re getting value for your money. Here are some factors to consider:

  1. Material: Look for shoes made from high-quality materials like genuine leather or suède. These materials are more likely to withstand wear and tear.

  2. Construction: Examine the stitching and overall construction of the shoes. Well-constructed footwear tends to be more durable and less likely to fall apart quickly.

  3. Sole: The sole of the shoe plays a crucial role in both comfort and durability. Look for shoes with a sturdy and flexible sole that offers good traction.

  4. Brand Reputation: Research brands known for their high-quality footwear. Read reviews and seek recommendations to ensure you’re purchasing from a reputable brand (see the ones I mentioned above).

  5. Price vs. Quality: While price is not always an indicator of quality, extremely cheap shoes may not last long. Consider your budget but also keep in mind that investing in a slightly pricier pair can pay off in terms of longevity. Looking at the second-hand market may be the solution to matching quality and budget.

Making informed decisions will make you choose footwear that will last longer and save you money in the long run. Not bad…uh?!

By the way: talking about durability…let’s have a closer look at materials!

Knowing the most common materials used for footwear: PU/vegan leather vs genuine leather/suède

No my darling, “vegan” doesn’t mean that material comes from vegetables. I’m sorry to be the one that gives you this news.

PU (Polyurethane), also called vegan leather, is actually a commodity plastic. You can find more details about polyurethane on the dedicated page on Wikipedia: wiki/Polyurethane .

With this being said, when it comes to choosing between PU (polyurethane) and genuine leather for footwear, there are several factors to consider. Let’s see them together:

Genuine Leather:

  1. Durability: Genuine leather tends to be more durable and long-lasting compared to PU. With proper care, leather shoes can withstand years of wear and tear.
  2. Breathability: Leather is a natural material that allows your feet to breathe, making it more comfortable, especially during warmer seasons.
  3. Aesthetics: Leather often has a richer and more luxurious appearance compared to PU. It also tends to develop a unique patina over time, adding character to the shoes.
  4. Environmental Impact: While leather is a natural material, its production can have environmental implications, including the use of resources and chemicals in the tanning process. However, there are more sustainable and ethically sourced options available.

PU leather:

  1. Affordability: PU footwear is typically more affordable (because of lower quality) than genuine leather, making it a budget-friendly option for those looking to save money.
  2. Variety: PU can be manufactured to mimic various textures and finishes, providing a wide range of style options.
  3. Water Resistance: PU is inherently more water-resistant than leather, which can be advantageous, especially in wet weather conditions.
  4. Ease of Care: PU footwear is generally easier to clean and maintain compared to leather, as it is less prone to staining and requires minimal conditioning, being based on a polymeric material.

Ultimately, the choice between PU and genuine leather depends on your personal preferences, budget, and lifestyle. If you prioritize durability, breathability, and a luxurious aesthetic, genuine leather may be the better investment. However, if affordability and ease of care are more important to you, PU could be a suitable alternative.

One point I ‘ll never stress enough is to consider exploring options for sustainably sourced leather, for pre-loved items or eco-friendly materials (like cotton, hemp..) to minimize environmental impact.

…if I would go for a PU product (be it footwear, bags or whatever..)?? No, thanks. Speaking from my own experience, PU shoes or bags are not durable and scream “cheap”. My tip here is to always take a look at the second-hand market for a high-quality and affordable accessory in genuine leather. Additionally, I can say that PU footwear causes fungal infections very easily, being a non-breathable material.

Sustainable and Ethical Considerations in Footwear Choices

As our awareness of sustainability and ethical practices grows, it’s important to consider these factors when choosing footwear. Here are some ways you can make more sustainable and ethical choices:

  1. Sustainable Materials: Look for shoes made from eco-friendly and sustainable materials like organic cotton, recycled fabrics/plastic, or plant-based alternatives. These materials have a lower environmental impact.
  2. Ethical Manufacturing: Research brands that prioritize fair trade and ethical manufacturing practices. Look for certifications like Fair Trade or B Corp to ensure the shoes are produced under fair and safe conditions.
Vivaia is, in this sense, one of the best choices on the market nowadays.
  3. Durability: Choose shoes that are built to last. Investing in durable footwear reduces the need for frequent replacements and minimizes waste.
  4. Repair and Resole: Instead of discarding worn-out shoes, consider repairing or resoling them. This extends their lifespan and reduces your environmental footprint.
  5. Second-hand and Vintage: Consider purchasing second-hand or vintage shoes. Not only can you find unique and stylish options, but you’re also giving these shoes a second life and reducing demand for new production.

I hope my considerations about sustainable and ethical factors can help you make more conscious choices (not only for your footwear) that resonate with your values.

The Role of Style and Fashion in Choosing Footwear

While comfort and functionality are paramount when selecting footwear, style and fashion should not be overlooked. Your shoes can make a fashion statement and complement your overall look. Here are some tips to strike a balance between style and comfort:

  1. Versatile Styles: Opt for shoe styles that can be easily dressed up or down. This way, you can get more wear out of them and have a greater variety of outfits to pair them with.

  2. Colour Choices: Choose neutral colours like black, brown, or beige for shoes that can be paired with a wide range of outfits. However, don’t be afraid to include a few statement shoes in bold colours or patterns to add a pop of personality to your wardrobe.

  3. Experiment with Different Styles: Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try different shoe styles. You might be surprised at how a unique pair of shoes can elevate your entire outfit.

  4. Consider Trends: Stay updated with the latest shoe trends to ensure your footwear is both stylish and fashionable. However, remember that trends come and go, so choose wisely and prioritize timeless designs that will stand the test of time.

Here are 10 types of footwear, of which 5 for F/W and 5 for S/S you should consider for a balanced wardrobe:

Let’s say I had to build my capsule wardrobe (so on trend lately!) from scratch: which kind of footwear would I keep or consider as a staple for each season??
It was right at this point that I realised that building a capsule wardrobe for women requires thoughtful consideration, especially when it comes to footwear.

So here’s my suggestion for 5 pairs of shoes for both Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer:

Fall/Winter Footwear:

1. Ankle Boots: Versatile and perfect for both casual and more formal occasions. Choose a pair in a neutral color like black, brown, or taupe to maximize versatility.

2. Knee-High Boots: Ideal for colder weather, knee-high boots offer both warmth and style. Opt for a pair in leather or suede for durability and sophistication.

3. Loafers: A classic choice for Fall/Winter, loafers are comfortable and effortlessly chic. Look for a pair in leather or suede with minimal detailing for a timeless appeal.

4. Heeled Booties: Perfect for dressing up any outfit, heeled booties add a touch of elegance and height. Choose a pair with a manageable heel height for comfort and versatility.

5. Weatherproof Boots: Essential for rainy or snowy days, weatherproof boots keep your feet warm and dry while still looking stylish. Invest in a pair of high-quality boots with waterproof features for maximum protection.

Spring/Summer Footwear:

1. Sneakers: Comfortable and practical, sneakers are a must-have for casual days and outdoor activities. Opt for a versatile pair in a neutral color or a classic white style that can be easily paired with various outfits.

2. Sandals: Perfect for warmer weather, sandals keep your feet cool and stylish. Choose a pair with adjustable straps and cushioned soles for comfort during long walks.

3. Espadrilles: Effortlessly chic, espadrilles add a touch of summer flair to any outfit. Look for a pair with a comfortable wedge or flat sole and a durable canvas or leather upper.

4. Ballet Flats: Timeless and versatile, ballet flats are a staple in any Spring/Summer wardrobe. Choose a pair in a neutral color like black, nude, or beige for easy pairing with different outfits.

5. Slide-On Mules: Comfortable and stylish, slide-on mules are perfect for warmer days when you want a hassle-free footwear option. Look for a pair with a low heel or flat sole for all-day comfort.

By investing in these ten pairs of shoes, you’ll have a versatile and stylish footwear collection that covers all seasons and occasions. Remember to choose high-quality shoes made from durable materials!

Shoe Trends 2024: What’s In And What’s Out

Based on the Spring-Summer 2024 fashion trends, several exciting footwear styles are expected to dominate the season. Here’s a breakdown of what’s in and what’s out:

In:

  1. Sandals and Loafers with Plateau: platform soles is gaining popularity for the Spring-Summer 2024 season. The trend features chunky sandals and platform loafers, which are being showcased with a variety of outfits, from dresses to relaxed trousers, offering a contemporary and stylish look.
  2. Skin-Tight & Slouchy Boots: Standout skin-tight boots, as well as slouchy boots are expected to be spring’s major trends this year. My tip: stick to neutrals like beige, black or camel for a total versatility.
  3. Thong Sandals: Thong sandals, whether simple or embellished, are predicted to be the go-to shoe for summer, as seen in collections from Chanel, Burberry, and Coperni.
  4. Ankle-Strap Details: Flats, Mary Janes, and clogs with ankle ties and tassel details, as well as shoes tied up in bows, are anticipated to be popular choices for the season.
  5. Kitten Heels: are the latest stylish statement, as showcased by brands like Toteme.
  6. White Sneakers: forget about 2023 chunky soles! Sneakers got back to basic with a total-white and off-white look, for a fresh and young touch to any outfit!!

More in general, we can say that the trend for Spring-Summer 2024 includes a mix of styles for women’s footwear, ranging from ladylike kitten heels and sleek pointy flats to chunky platform sandals and sporty retro sneakers.

This diverse mix of vibes appears to be the focal point of the latest shoe trends, offering versatility and a touch of eclectic style for the upcoming season.

Additionally, metallics, raffia and woven details, platforms and chunky sandals, as well as net and mesh elements are emerging as popular choices for women’s footwear. The trend also suggests a move away from rounded toe ballet flats to more of a pointy toe flat. The trend encompasses a wide range of styles and materials, from metallic tones to natural elements and textures, providing a refreshing update to spring and summer wardrobes.

Out:

  1. Rounded Toe Ballet Flats: The trend suggests a move away from rounded toe ballet flats to more of a pointy toe flat.

  2. Chunky Sole Sneakers: with a certain disappointment of many of my friends, we are seing for this spring a sort of downfall of all that  chunkiness in trainers…may I say: finally?!?

  3. Dad Sandals: are dead too, after killing femininity. Thank you and rest in peace.

  4. Super high heels:  2024 Spring/Summer trends give a cut to insane heights. Heels over 8cm (3″) are definitely set aside.
